Veteran VOA Host Shaka Ssali dies at 71
Shaka Ssali, the renowned Ugandan journalist and broadcaster widely known as the face of Voice of America (VOA), has passed away at the age of 71.
An official statement confirmed that Ssali died in Virginia, USA, just two weeks shy of his 72nd birthday.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Shaka Ssali, the long-time host of VOA’s Straight Talk Africa. Ssali, a respected journalist and broadcaster, has left behind a lasting impact on African journalism,” the statement read.
While the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, reports suggest he had been battling a long-term illness.
For over 20 years, Ssali was the voice and face of Straight Talk Africa, a program that facilitated vital discussions on democracy, governance, and development, engaging African leaders, analysts, and citizens alike. His sharp interviews and unwavering commitment to press freedom earned him admiration and respect across the continent.
In his most recent public appearance, Ssali addressed and dispelled rumors of his death that had circulated in April 2024, in a video shared on social media.
