Vivo Energy launches 2nd edition of Fit2Drive programme
Vivo Energy, distributors of Shell fuel in Ghana, has launched the second edition of its driver education and wellness programme
The programme dubbed Fit2Drive, aims to educate approximately 1,000 commercial drivers across the country.
This year’s education will be held in five regional capitals: Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Koforidua, and Techiman.
The Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, Jean-Michel Arlandis, highlighted the initiative’s role in promoting a healthier and safer driving community.
He noted the crucial role of drivers in driving economic growth by ensuring timely and safe transportation of goods and people.
Arlandis acknowledged the often-overlooked personal health challenges faced by drivers due to the demands of their profession.
He stated that maintaining driver health is not just an individual responsibility but is in the interest of all.
The Fit2Drive programme equips drivers with essential tools for leading healthier lives, covering topics from regular health screenings to stress management techniques. “A healthy driver is a safer driver,” he added.
Vivo Energy Ghana will distribute thermometers, glucometers, and blood pressure readers to transport unions in participating regions to facilitate personal healthcare.
The Acting Director General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Ing. David Osafo Adonteng, commended Vivo Energy for its long-standing partnership in promoting road safety in Ghana.
He noted the importance of incorporating road safety into national strategies, especially during election years, which historically see a spike in road accidents.
Ing. Adonteng added that the NRSA has implemented a stronger campaign this year, stating that election years tend to witness a rise in road crashes and fatalities due to the high volume of political activities.
“Election years are crucial for us because historical statistics show that crashes, deaths, and injuries tend to increase during such periods. This year, we are saying no to this trend. We have already begun engaging politicians at the national, regional, and district levels to help curb road accidents,” he emphasized.
Ing. David Osafo Adonteng also drew attention to the alarming health conditions of many drivers, with some exhibiting dangerously high blood pressure levels while still operating vehicles.
He stressed the need for regular health checks for drivers, noting the link between driver health and road safety.
He affirmed the NRSA’s commitment to supporting the road safety programmes spearheaded by Vivo Energy, ensuring they are not short-lived but sustained until the set objectives are fully met.
