Zomlion to invest $200m in Lagos State for waste management initiatives

The Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), through its subsidiary Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, has achieved a significant milestone by signing an innovative export agreement with Germany’s FIMA Industries GmbH and Faun Umwelttechnik GmbH.

The agreement was formalized between Zoomlion Nigeria Limited and the two German companies, with funding facilitated by the German government through Euler Hermes and Oddo BHF Bank.

This strategic partnership significantly enhances Zoomlion Nigeria Limited’s waste management capabilities, reinforcing its industry standing. It merges Zoomlion’s expertise in waste collection with FIMA’s advanced technology and global reach.

The export deal is anticipated to foster sustainable practices and promote a cleaner environment through the provision of waste management services and equipment. By leveraging Zoomlion’s skills alongside FIMA’s innovative solutions, the collaboration aims to drive sustainable development across Africa, showcasing the ability to deliver high-quality infrastructure and paving the way for future projects.

The signing ceremony occurred on October 7, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria, attended by senior executives from FIMA and representatives from the Federal Republic of Germany.

Mr. Haider Said, Executive Director of Environment and Sanitation, and Mrs. Habiba Abubakar, Country Director of Zoomlion Nigeria, signed on behalf of Jospong Group, while Markus Maierhofer, CEO of FIMA Industries, represented his company.

Mr. Said highlighted the success in Ghana and the collaboration with FIMA, supported by the German and Lagos governments, announcing plans to establish three waste treatment plants in Nigeria. “This contract, valued at approximately 40 million Euros, will finance these facilities,” he stated. He added that the initiative aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by about 1.5 million tons annually, with the Jospong Group investing around 200 million dollars in Lagos State for waste management over the next 12 to 24 months.

“We hope this project will greatly contribute to environmental preservation,” Mr. Said affirmed.

Markus Maierhofer noted that this contract completes the framework for waste treatment plants in Lagos, operated by Zoomlion, Africa’s largest waste management firm. “This will enable compost recycling, helping to keep the environment clean and safe,” he stated, calling it a transformative initiative for waste reduction across Lagos State.

He emphasized that the project focuses on biological waste treatment, with a commitment of about 10 million Euros for the plant’s mechanisms.

Lucas Doerr, Head of Business Development Export at FAUN Umwelttechnik GmbH, outlined the waste management process: waste collectors will gather and transport waste to transfer stations, then to a solid waste recycling plant and engineered landfill for proper disposal. He assured that this milestone is just the beginning, with more achievements to come, and expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government and the Commissioner of Environment for their invaluable support.
