A warm Northern welcome: Hon. Ali Adolph G. John opens 2025 GAMLS Nat’l Congress in Tamale
Tamale hosts Medical Laboratory Scientists after a decade
Tamale, the bustling capital of Ghana’s Northern Region, came alive on Thursday, 30th October 2025, as it hosted the opening ceremony of the 2025 Annual National Congress of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS). The event, held at the Sanctuary of Wind and Fire Assemblies of God Church, brought together professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the country.
Delivering the welcome address, the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolph G. John, expressed profound gratitude for the choice of Tamale as host city—marking the first time in ten years that the national congress has been held in the region. He described the occasion as “a homecoming of knowledge and collaboration,” reflecting Tamale’s growing importance as a hub of innovation, culture, and national development.
Celebrating a Theme of Global Relevance
This year’s congress theme, “Enhancing Laboratory Resilience: Combating Emerging Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Resistance through Emerging Technologies, Collaboration and Research,” resonated deeply with the Minister.
He commended the GAMLS for choosing a theme that aligns with global health priorities, especially in the wake of recent pandemics. “It speaks directly to the pressing health challenges of our time,” he said, “and the indispensable role medical laboratory professionals play in safeguarding the nation’s wellbeing.”
Hon. John paid tribute to the often-unseen work of laboratory scientists, noting that “every test result, every diagnosis, and every public health intervention begins with your effort.” He described them as “the invisible heroes ensuring accuracy, reliability, and scientific integrity in our healthcare system.”
Showcasing the Culture and Spirit of Tamale
Beyond science and policy, the Minister took a moment to celebrate the cultural richness of the Northern Region. He invited visitors to explore Tamale’s vibrant markets, sample traditional dishes such as Tuo Zaafi, Fura da Nono, and Wakye, and experience the craftsmanship in smocks, leatherwork, and basketry that define the region’s creative spirit.
“Tamale is one of the fastest-growing cities in West Africa,” he said proudly. “It is a modern metropolis that still retains its traditional warmth and communal values.”
He also highlighted key cultural and historical landmarks, including the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, and the Savanna Centre for Contemporary Art, urging guests to take in the full experience of Northern Ghana’s hospitality and heritage.
Health Development and Government Commitment
Turning to development, Hon. John underscored the Northern Region’s growing contribution to national progress through decentralization, infrastructure expansion, and human capital development.
In the health sector, he reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening laboratory systems and public health infrastructure. He cited specific initiatives outlined in the NDC government’s manifesto, including plans to establish a Medical Laboratory Council and build additional public health reference laboratories.
“These initiatives,” he said, “will enhance the quality of care and improve our response to public health emergencies.”
Collaboration: The Pillar of Resilience
The Minister emphasized that true resilience in healthcare cannot be achieved in isolation. “It takes the combined efforts of government, academia, civil society, professional bodies, and communities,” he stated.
He urged participants to use the congress as a platform for building partnerships and fostering collaboration that transcends institutions and disciplines. “Resilience, collaboration, and research,” he added, “are the three pillars that define sustainable progress.”
A Call to Engage and Explore
Hon. John encouraged delegates to engage actively in the congress sessions and also take time to enjoy the peace, warmth, and cultural beauty of Tamale. “Take an evening walk through the city centre, enjoy the sunset over the savannah, and let the warmth of our people remind you that the Northern Region is truly a welcoming home for all,” he said.
He commended the National Executive Council and the Local Organizing Committee of GAMLS for their hard work in organizing a successful event, describing their teamwork as a reflection of the profession’s spirit of precision and cooperation.
A Heartfelt Closing
In closing, the Northern Regional Minister extended his deepest appreciation to GAMLS and all participants for their contribution to Ghana’s healthcare system.
“The Northern Region is honoured to host you,” he affirmed. “We welcome you not just as guests, but as partners in building a healthier and stronger Ghana.”
He concluded with blessings for the association and the nation:
“God bless GAMLS, God bless the Northern Region, and God bless our homeland Ghana.”
