Today’s hearing forms part of series of public hearing on the controversial bill seeking to criminalise homosexuality- gayism, lesbianism and advocacy.

The controversial LGBTQ+ Bill was laid before parliament and reffered to Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament to present report to the plenary for debates, ushering-in further processes for passage.

18 intellectuals, legal practitioners, academics, professors, Communications experts led by Lawyer Akoto Ampaw including Dean of University of Ghana School of Information and Communications Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo, Founder of CDD-GHANA Prof. Gyimah Boadi, Executive Director of CDD-GHANA, Prof. H. Kwesi Prempeh, Founder of Media Foundation for West Africa Prof. Kwame Karikari, Former Citi FM Journalist Nana Ama Agyeman Asante, Dean of University of Ghana School of Law Prof. Raymond Atuguba, Dr. Kojo P. Asante, Prof. E Takyiwa and others have petitioned Parliament to reject the bill.

Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs committee of Parliament is expected to digest over 100 memos and produce report to the house for debates and decisions.

Speaking ahead of the consideration of the controversial bill, Deputy Majority Leader and Effutu Member of Parliament Lawyer Alexander Afenyo Markin said the committee must be given the autonomy to discharge its duties as tasked.

He noted that the committee is determined to hear ten petitioners weekly within fifteen weeks upon which collective report will be presented to the plenary.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declared that debates and voting on the bill will be made public to unearth the position of every MP on the proposed anti-gay law.

The bill if passed into law will criminalise Homosexuality- gayism, lesbianism, advocacy of advocates and similar groupings.
