Privileges C’ttee hearing: Ken Agyapong fails to show up

It has emerged that Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong failed to show up today for questioning by Privileges Committee of Parliament tasked by the Speaker to probe alleged contempt case levelled against him.

Kennedy Agyapong was referred to the Privileges Committee for threatening to beat Joy FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor based testimonies he gave at Justice George Kingsley Koomson-led Committee tasked by Interior Minister to probe the unfortunate Ejura sporadic shootings by the military.

The Interior and Defence Committee Chair Kennedy Agyapong was referred to the committee when his colleague MP Alhassan Suhuyini drew the house attention to the outburst and scheduled to appear today for questioning.

But, the committee met only to realise that Mr. Agyapong was nowhere to be found, and a rather unofficial information reaching the house revealed that the later is out of the jurisdiction at the blindside of the committee, a total disrespect to the laid down rules in contempt matters.

This forced the committee adjourn sitting without a fixed date.

Speaking after no show at the hearing, the petitioner AIhassan Suhuyini “dared Mr. Agyapong to submit himself at the committee for questioning if he is not a coward “.

Mr. Suhuyini noted that, it is in the “interest of the committee to do a good job because the public is monitoring proceedings”.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Privileges Committee and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei Owusu insists “The 31-Member Privileges Committee will meet at 5pm Thursday August 5, 2021 to hear Alhassan Suhuyini who drew the house attention to the matter”.

It is important to anchor the point that this the second time the firebrand Lawmaker Kennedy Agyapong has been dragged before the Privileges Committee on grounds of alleged disparaging comment and threats.

Parliament is rising Friday August 6, 2021 for a short break.
