Anti-Gay Bill: We’ll close down embassies that deny MPs visa- Muntaka
Minority Chief Whip of Ghana’s 8th Parliament Muntaka Mubarak has issued stern warnings to Embassies in Ghana, adding that Members of Ghanaian Parliament will staged series of demonstrations in the capital Accra to ensure that embassies of countries which impose visa sanctions on MPs supporting anti-LGBTQ+ Bill are totally shutdown.
Speaking in an interview monitored by African Editors on Thursday 14 October 2021 in Accra, the Asawase Lawmaker Muntaka Mubarak insists “No foreigner should attempt to impose their ways of lives on us and let me sound warnings to those embassies in Ghana which are threatening MPs supporting the bill. Look, if they try, I will lead protest and we’ll demonstrate to ensure they are closed down”.
Muntaka Mubarak noted that “It’s simple. You don’t want as to come to your country, impossing visa sanctions on MPs because we’re making a law in our own country to criminalise LGBTQ+ or homosexuality-gayism and lesbianism…we’ll also not allow you to stay in our country. It’s that simple. Stay in your country and practise your LGBTQ+ and we continue to stay in our country and stick to our cultural values”.
Contributing to the debate, Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu has asked proponents and defenders of the anti-gay bill to offer constructive criticisms to the Bill devoid of emotional sentiments and threats.
Meanwhile, Minority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament Haruna Iddrisu said “We’ll fight together to encourage sponsors of the bill led by Sam George to ensure our core values of the Ghanaian are protected.
According to him, ” Minority Caucus of Parliament is taking urgent steps to protect MPs in support of the bill”.
Known as Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021, the proposed law currently before Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, if passed will criminalise activities, advocacy of homosexuals, gays and lesbians.
18 intellectuals, Professors, lawyers led by Counsel Akoto Ampaw have petitioned Parliament to reject the bill arguing that the sponsors of the bill are on a fanatic crusade.
