Assin North MP-Elect Gyakye Quayson sworn-in

Assin North MP-Elect Gyakye Quayson sworn-in

Accompanied by a jubilant crowd, James Gyakye Quayson was officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Assin North today, Tuesday, 4th July 2023.

The swearing-in ceremony took place in Parliament, where he took the oath of secrecy and the parliamentary oath before Speaker Alban Sumana Bagbin.

Speaker Bagbin extended his congratulations to Mr. Gyakye Quayson and warmly welcomed him to the House.

The ceremony was attended by local chiefs, members of the clergy, and residents of Assin North who showed their support for the newly sworn-in MP.

Members of the Minority in Parliament wore white attire and enthusiastically chanted Mr. Quayson’s name, demonstrating their solidarity as he officially assumed his role.

Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, and other NDC national executives were also present in Parliament to witness the event.

It is worth noting that Mr. Quayson’s initial election as Member of Parliament was declared illegal by the Supreme Court on May 17.

The court ruled that he had violated constitutional provisions due to his dual citizenship at the time of the election, thereby prohibiting him from acting as an MP.

Despite this setback, Mr. Quayson decided to contest the subsequent by-election, emerging victorious with 57.56 percent of the total votes cast.

He garnered 17,245 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 42.15 percent of the votes. Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) secured a meager 0.29 percent of the votes.

With his successful election and official swearing-in ceremony, James Gyakye Quayson assumes his position as the Member of Parliament for Assin North, ready to represent his constituents and contribute to the legislative process.
