AUCC receives presidential charter to become AUCB

On Thursday, December 19, 2024, the African University College of Communications (AUCC) achieved a significant milestone in its evolution. With the formal assent of the President, the institution has now received its Presidential Charter, officially transforming into the African University of Communications and Business (AUCB). This transformation represents a new chapter in the institution’s journey as a beacon of academic excellence and a vital contributor to the socio-economic landscape of Ghana and beyond.

For the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and leadership of AUCC, the Presidential Charter is more than just an official recognition—it’s the culmination of years of dedication, growth, and academic rigor. This achievement follows a journey marked by mentorship from prestigious institutions like the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, and the University of Education, Winneba. Additionally, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the Ministry of Education provided invaluable support, helping to guide AUCC through the steps needed to attain its autonomous university status.

A legacy of academic excellence and growth

Founded in 2002 by the Honorable Kojo Yankah, AUCB started as the African Institute of Journalism and Communications (AIJC), with a focused mission to provide specialized education in journalism and communications. Over the years, the institution has expanded its offerings and influence. In 2010, the University broadened its academic scope with the creation of the School of Business. This development laid the foundation for AUCC’s continued expansion into other academic fields, culminating in the renaming of the School of Business to the Sam E. Jonah School of Business in 2014.

This broader scope of study reflects the University’s vision and mission: to combine world-class communication and media studies with programmes that emphasize business, technology, and entrepreneurship. With the new name—African University of Communications and Business (AUCB)—comes an even greater commitment to equipping students with the skills and knowledge to succeed in an increasingly globalized world. The rebranding signifies the University’s expanded role in fostering innovation and leadership in the fields of business and communications, key drivers of Ghana’s and Africa’s economic future.

A Pan-African framework for the future

AUCB’s new status as a Chartered University is a testament to its capacity to provide relevant, high-quality education within a Pan-African context. The institution’s dual emphasis on communications and business education makes it uniquely positioned to meet the evolving demands of today’s fast-paced global economy. Through a rigorous curriculum and professional development opportunities, AUCB seeks to nurture future leaders who can drive change across Africa and beyond.

In his statement, Prof. Isaac Abeku Blankson, the University’s Vice Chancellor, expressed immense pride in this achievement. “This new status reinforces our commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and the holistic development of our students,” he said. “It is our firm belief that AUCB will continue to make a significant impact, not only in Ghana but throughout Africa and beyond, as we prepare our students to lead and contribute meaningfully to their communities.”

A look ahead

As AUCB begins this new chapter, it is inviting all internal and external stakeholders—students, alumni, faculty, staff, and partners—to join in celebrating this pivotal achievement. The University remains focused on building a lasting legacy of academic excellence, entrepreneurial innovation, and societal impact.

The road ahead is one of immense promise, as AUCB reaffirms its commitment to producing graduates who will thrive in diverse fields, contributing to the development of Africa’s communication, media, and business sectors. The University’s transformation into a fully-fledged autonomous institution sets the stage for the continued expansion of its influence, educational offerings, and partnerships.

Through dedication, innovation, and collaboration, AUCB is poised to be a leader in higher education, shaping the future of Africa and its global positioning in the years to come.
