Chief Justice dismisses petition for Special Prosecutor’s removal

The Chief Justice of Ghana Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, has dismissed the petition filed by former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, seeking the removal of his successor, Kissi Agyebeng. The Chief Justice found that the petition did not meet the required standard to establish a prima facie case for removal.

The petition, dated April 30, 2024, was sent to the President by Amidu and then forwarded to the Chief Justice on May 6, 2024. Amidu’s allegations included procurement breaches, abuses involving judges and the administration of justice, violations of citizens’ rights, improper appointments, and alleged abuses of office in certain arrests made by Agyebeng.

Amidu has expressed disappointment in the Chief Justice’s decision, stating that he was not provided with a copy of the review conducted by her. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in such matters, even though he respects the Chief Justice’s discretion in determining the outcome of the petition.
