ECOWAS to outline roadmap for Guinea’s return to constitutional rule

African Editors is learning that ECOWAS intends to fashion out the roadmap for Guinea to return to constitutional rule in six months.

Guinea military junta is currently holding a 4-day meeting in Conakry alongside ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit in Ghana to determine the way forward for the suspended Francophone ECOWAS Member state.

African Editors sources have confirmed that the book runners of the Guinea Coup are currently meeting Civil Society Organisations, other identifiable groups and those who matter to decide on appropriate approaches to adopt to usher-in transition from dictatorial regime to constitutional order.

Firstly, Guinea is expected to amend the constitution back to a 2-term limit of government and repeal the controversial 3-term limit introduced by ousted President Alpha Conde through a referendum.

Apart from that, Guinea will hold elections within 6 months to return the country to constitutional rule.

Information available to African Editors is that the leadership of the Guinean military junta is expecting that ECOWAS will draw lessons from their ongoing 4-day meeting and consider its outcomes in their decisions to be tabled before them in Guinea for consideration.

Meanwhile, ECOWAS is expected to come up with a communique at the end of Extraordinary meeting underway in Accra, Ghana that will spell out the roadmap for Guinea to bounce back to constitutional regime devoid of dictatorial tendencies.

The communique will also put in force urgent steps to release Prof. Alpha Conde from detention whilst providing health assistance to him on his orders.
