GAMLS@50: Middle Belt holds 2nd lecture in Kumasi Technical University

President of Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists Dr. Abu Abudu Rahamani has urged lab professionals in the country to conduct enough research in the area of alternative medicine whilst exploring the options to take advantage for the benefits of society.

This is the second public lecture in series of lectures as part of the GAMLS@50 Anniversary celebration.

The occasion was graced by dignitaries from Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists and beyond including the NEO of GAMLS (President, Vice President, General Secretary and Financial Secretary), Regional Executives of Ashanti, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, national leadership of MELPWU, GAMLS@50 Anniversary Committee members, Students (FG-MELSA) and some eminent personnel .

The Ashanti Regional Chairman welcomed all to the lecture and thanked 50th Anniversary Celebration Committee, NEO, and NEC for choosing Kumasi to host the middlebelt public lecture and asked that participants take advantage to enjoy the hospitalities in Kumasi.

The President of GAMLS Dr. Abu Abudu Rahamani after stating the hurdles and the Obstacles the profession has to overcome to arrive at this point, stated that there is still more areas to explore especially in the area of Research.

The president stated that, Herbal Medicine is here with us and as scientists, keen interest must be taken to see the opportunities there are, and that COA has been a leading and shinning example when it comes to Herbal medicines hence the invitation for the public lecture on the Theme: GAMLS AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE.

The Representative from AfriHealth in her address stated; Herbal Medicine for us in Africa is actually the Original Medicine not the Alternative Medicine. That AfriHealth have been championing the use of our local and indigenous products for optimum health.
AfriHealth have been in partnership academia, research, to promote health and therefore there exist a huge opportunity for members of GAMLS as Scientists to partner and champion this course.

Dr. Mawuli, the presentative of COA in the stead of Professor Duncan call on members of GAMLS to make the case, scientific proof that Herbal Medicine is actually good for our consumption through scientific studies and Pubpicatiobs. He invited members of GAMLS to take up the challenge in the areas antimicrobial studies, toxicological studies among others in the Herbal Medicine industry.

In his closing remarks, the chairman of the occasion Dr Tony Basing stated that, the time is now for GAMLS to take advantage of these opportunities that exist in the Herbal Medicine industry and quickly explore it before it’s taken away by other professionals. He called on GAMLS to champion a course where Herbal Medicine will included in the curriculum of the training of Medical Laboratory Scientists.

The occasion was graced by dignitaries from GAMLS and beyond including the NEO of GAMLS (President, Vice President, General Secretary and Financial Secretary), Regional Executives of Ashanti, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, national leadership of MELPWU, GAMLS@50 Anniversary Committee members, Students (FG-MELSA) and some eminent personnel .

He mentioned that Alternative medicine practice has improved on the years and regaining much attention due to Antimicrobial resistance.

2. The President of GAMLS after stating the hurdles and the Obstacles the profession have to Overcome to arrive at this point, stated that there is still more areas to explore especially in the area of Research.

3. The Representative (Mrs Georgina Yeboah) from AfriHealth in her address stated; Herbal Medicine for us in Africa is actually the Original Medicine not the Alternative Medicine. That AfriHealth have been championing the use of our local and indigenous products for optimum health.

Dr. Mawuli Agbale, the Head of Research at COA Manufacturing and Research Company representing the s Professor Samuel Ato Duncan call on members of GAMLS to make the case, scientific proof that Herbal Medicine is actually good for our consumption through scientific studies and Pubpicatiobs. He invited members of GAMLS to take up the challenge in the areas antimicrobial studies, toxicological studies among others in the Herbal Medicine industry. He indicated that the medical laboratory sector must be developed to provide evidence for further acceptance of Alternative Medicine. He also call for development of specialty areas such as Medical Microbiology, Medical Immunology as well as Chemical Pathology.

The need for reviewing the current curriculum to enable medical laboratory science students to get introduced Alternative medicine was discussed. Professionals also advocated for industrial trips to Alternative medicine industry was also discussed.

The lecture also called for regulation of Medical Laboratory units in the Traditional medicine clinic to ensure that services are provided by well trained and competent medical laboratory science professionals.

6.
