GFA dissolves Black Stars Mgt C’ttee

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dissolved the Management Committee of the Senior National Team, the Black Stars, following their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars ended their AFCON qualification campaign in Group F with only three points, finishing at the bottom of the group.

In a press release on Thursday, November 21, 2024, the GFA expressed deep regret over the team’s inability to qualify for the continental tournament, marking the first such failure in 21 years. The statement also conveyed their shared disappointment with the Ghanaian public:

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) sincerely apologizes to the people of Ghana for the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025. We fully understand the frustration this has caused and share in the sadness of our devoted fans. We acknowledge that the team’s performance did not meet the high expectations of the nation, and for that, we are truly sorry.”

Ghana’s failure to secure a spot for next year’s AFCON marks a new low for the Black Stars, following a string of disappointing group-stage exits at recent tournaments.

In an effort to address the decline in performance, the GFA announced the immediate dissolution of the Black Stars’ Management Committee.

“The Executive Council, during its meeting on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, made the following decisions:

Immediate dissolution of the Management Committee of the senior national football team, the Black Stars.

We sincerely thank the members of the Committee for their service to Ghana Football over the years.”

Additionally, the GFA revealed plans to meet with the Head Coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, on November 27, 2024, to review his technical report on the AFCON qualifiers and evaluate the overall performance of the technical team since his appointment earlier this year.

In response to calls for reform, the GFA also announced plans to host a retreat on November 28, 2024, at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence. The retreat will gather stakeholders—including SWAG, the media, the National Sports Authority, PFAG, former captains and players, coaches, supporters, and professionals from various fields—to discuss strategies for improving the Black Stars and Ghanaian football as a whole. The goal is to develop a roadmap for enhancing the performance of the Black Stars and other national teams.
