GHS tightens protocols at KIA over Omicron variant
Ghana Health Service (GHS) has amended its protocols for international travellers via Kotoka International Airport.
The GHS finds the latest review of its protocols to contain, combat and prevent the spread of the infectious Covid-19 pandemic due to the influx of new Omicron variant.
A statement issued by the GHS said “The current increase in cases together with the detection of the Omicron variant among international arrivals end the expected Increase during the festive season call for urgent actions no prevent a major surge in COVID- 19 cases in Ghana”.

Apart from that, the Ghana Health Service has issued directive that all persons 18 years and above arriving in Ghana from December 12, 2021 must show proof and evidence of full vaccination in consonance with the new Covid-19 protocols.
GHS noted that, “all unvaccinated Ghanaians and residents who are currently outside the country and intend to return within 14 days from the midnight of 12th December 2021 are exempted.”
The press statement signed by GHS Director-General, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, out of the 34 cases detected at the airport, 75% of them were unvaccinated.
According to GHS Director-General, “Over the last two weeks, cases from the airport account for about 60% of the total cases recorded in Ghana”.
The latest review of the Covid-19 protocols forms part of government plans to contain, combat and prevent the spread of the infectious pandemic.
