Gov’t has enough measures to fight corruption –Ex-Deputy A-G

Former Deputy Attorney General and MP former Garu Tempane Joseph Dindiok Kpemka, has praised the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their efforts in combating corruption. He commended the government for implementing laws and policies that have made it easier for agencies like the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to hold government officials accountable.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on February 3, 2024 monitored by African Editors, the former Garu Tempane lawmaker Kpemka noted that the OSP has been actively investigating and prosecuting sitting public officials and institutions, which is unprecedented in Ghana’s history. He emphasized the significance of this in upholding the purpose for which the office was established.

These remarks were made in light of Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, which ranks Ghana 70th out of 180 countries, with a score of 43 out of 100. In comparison to other Sub-Saharan African countries, Ghana scored higher than 39 others, such as Burkina Faso, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Tanzania, and Lesotho.

Kpemka acknowledged the government’s efforts in the fight against corruption but highlighted the need for further action to eradicate it completely from society. Despite the existence of strict laws, he noted that there seems to be a lack of progress in reducing corruption to the barest minimum, and emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing the underlying causes of this issue.
