Jospong Group, Uasin Gishu County to improve sanitation services in Kenya

In a strategic move to address Kenya’s pressing sanitation challenges, Uasin Gishu County has teamed up with the Jospong Group of Companies to transform waste management and foster a cleaner, healthier future for the region.

On Friday, November 22, 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Accra between Jospong Group and the government of Uasin Gishu County. This agreement is aimed at enhancing sanitation services in Kenya, leveraging Jospong Group’s expertise in waste management to tackle the country’s sanitation crisis.

Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, Governor of Uasin Gishu County, expressed optimism about the partnership, emphasizing that it would significantly improve sanitation and generate job opportunities for local communities. “We are confident that this collaboration will not only enhance waste management but also provide employment for our people,” he stated.

The partnership is expected to drive improvements across various facets of sanitation management, benefiting thousands of residents through job creation and more effective waste disposal systems. Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, led the negotiations and is committed to making this initiative a success.

Governor Chelilim stressed the importance of sustainable waste management solutions for public health and environmental preservation, commending Jospong Group for its innovative approach to tackling waste-related issues.

As part of the collaboration, there will be knowledge-sharing and capacity-building between Uasin Gishu County and Jospong Group. A delegation from Uasin Gishu County visited Jospong Group’s facilities in Ghana to gain insight into best practices in waste management and sanitation services.

The tour began on Thursday, November 21, 2024, with visits to Universal Plastic Products and Recycling Limited (UPPR) and the Zoomlion Workshop, followed by a stop at the Transfer Station in Abokobi. On Friday, the delegation toured the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACRP), the JA Plant pool, and the Sewerage Systems Wastewater Plant. Their visit concluded on Saturday, November 23, with tours of Metro TV and the Kpone Landfills.

This partnership builds on a similar visit in June 2024, when a Kenyan delegation, including members of the Council of Governors, city managers, and technical experts, toured Jospong Group’s facilities in Accra and Kumasi. The delegation was impressed by the innovative waste management solutions and the integration of the Youth Employment Agency’s waste and sanitation programs.

By combining their strengths, Jospong Group and Uasin Gishu County are taking significant steps to address Kenya’s sanitation needs and create a healthier, more sustainable environment for thousands of Kenyans.
