Let’s extend housemanship to 2 years for MLSDs- Ex-Prez

Former President of the University of Development Studies’ (UDS) Medical Laboratory Science Students’ Association Dr. Nii Otoo Dodoo has urged government to extend housemanship of new doctors to two years in order to provide adequate practical training needed for the job markets.

According to him, extending the housemanship period from the current one to two years adequately prepares graduates for the licensure examinations.

Speaking at the induction and oath swearing ceremony for newly qualified Allied Health Professions Council on Tuesday 9 November 2021 in Accra Former University of Deveopment Studies (UDS) Medical Laboratory Science Students’ Association President Dr. Nii Otoo Dodoo said “Extending the housemanship period to two years will enhance professional competence required for standards in the allied health sector”.

Meanwhile, 2021 Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science Course Representative Dr. Comfort Owusu Asafo Agyei has urged government to immediately give enough recognition to Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science Course being pursued at University of Deveopment Studies (UDS) since 2014.

Started in 2014 and offered solely by the University of Deveopment Studies UDS, students pursuing Doctors of Medical Laboratory Science course spend six years to complete.

According to her, the Doctors of Medical Laboratory Science under housemanship must be paid special remuneration for the special services they render for one year period.

In all, 254 students graduated including 136 graduates in Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science, 76 graduates in Doctor of Optometrist, 9 graduates in MPHIL Medical Physicist, 22 graduates in MSC Dietetics and 11 in MSC Audiology.
