Dr. Johnson Asiamah replaces Dr. Addison as BoG Governor

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr. Johnson Asiamah as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana, pending approval by the Council of State. This follows the acceptance of a formal request from the current Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, to take leave ahead of his retirement on March 31, 2025.

Dr. Asiamah brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2016 to 2017. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton, UK, and has vast expertise in monetary policy, financial stability regulation, and economic research.

According to a statement from the Presidency, his in-depth knowledge of Ghana’s financial system positions him well to lead the central bank. With over 23 years at the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Asiamah has played a significant role in shaping the nation’s banking policies. His leadership has been marked by a strong commitment to sound monetary and exchange rate policies, financial system stability, and fostering economic growth.

The government anticipates that under Dr. Asiamah’s leadership, the Bank of Ghana will continue to promote economic stability and resilience, with a focus on sustainable economic development, price stability, and necessary financial sector reforms.

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison to begin terminal leave

Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, will begin his terminal leave on February 3, 2025, ahead of his retirement. Dr. Addison’s tenure, which began on April 3, 2017, and was extended with a second term starting March 29, 2021, will officially end on March 28, 2025, in accordance with the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612), as amended.

Dr. Addison’s decision to take his accumulated leave before his retirement date has been approved by President John Mahama, facilitating a smooth transition in leadership. Over the course of his two terms, Dr. Addison has played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s monetary policies and ensuring financial stability.

The Bank of Ghana has expressed its gratitude to Dr. Addison for his exceptional service and contributions to both the institution and the nation’s economy.
