Mahama revokes appointments of MMDCEs

In a decisive move to restructure local governance, President John Dramani Mahama has revoked the appointments of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), along with the appointments of Assembly Members across the country.

This action marks one of President Mahama’s first steps following his inauguration as Ghana’s 6th President on January 7, 2025.

The revocation, effective immediately, aligns with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) and its amendment under the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).

A letter from Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, officially communicated the decision to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development in Accra.

The directive also instructs Coordinating Directors of the respective Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to assume the role of acting chief executives until new appointments are made.

This move is part of the government’s plan to appoint fresh leadership at the local level, in line with its commitment to decentralisation and national development.
