Major Mahama: 12 out of 14 found guilty of murder charges
The 12 individuals involved in the Major Mahama case have been unanimously found guilty of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and abetment of murder. This includes the Assembly Member of the area who was accused of inciting the community to attack Major Mahama. However, two of the accused have been acquitted and released as they were found not guilty of the charges against them.
The jury has been dismissed, and the convicted individuals are now awaiting sentencing from Justice Mariama Owusu.
The background to this case is that Major Mahama was killed in Denkyira-Obuasi, Central Region, on May 29, 2017, while on duty. It was later revealed that he was mistaken for a robber.
Over 50 suspects were initially arrested, but only 14 have been selected for prosecution. These individuals include the then-Assemblyman for Denkyira Obuasi, William Baah, as well as Bernard Asamoah, Kofi Nyame alias Abortion, Akwasi Boah, Kwame Tuffour, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim, and Bismarck Donkor. The remaining accused are John Bosie, Akwasi Baah, Charles Kwaning, Emmanuel Badu, Bismarck Abanga, and Kwadwo Anima.
In July 2022, the High Court rejected the submission of no case made by the lawyers of the 14 accused individuals. The defense argued that the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence against them. However, Justice Mariama Owusu disagreed and stated that the charges of causing harm and murder against Major Mahama had been adequately demonstrated by the prosecution. She overruled the submission and called upon the accused persons to present their defense.
