SSA-UG, FUSSAG declare strike today, UTAG joins Monday

Senior Staff Association of University of Ghana (SSA-UG) together with Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) in sixteen (16) regions has declared full-blown nationwide strike today over worsening conditions of service.

This was after the 72- hour ultimatum given by the two labour unions to government to resolve outstanding issues of unfavourable conditions of service expired.

Speaking in an interview monitored by African Editors on Tuesday 27 July 2021 in Accra, National Chairman of University of Ghana Senior Staff Association (SSA-UG) Zacharia Mohammed said “We are asking all our members in the sixteen universities of Ghana to immediately lay down their tools. National Labour Commission asked us to call off our first industrial action in June and directed government to immediately resolve our grievances but the government has been dragging its feet”.

“The attitudes of government implied that they will not comply with NLC directive”.

He noted that “When government violated the NLC order, the NLC did nothing about it but the NLC attempted to seek injunction in court when we embarked on industrial action”

Although, Executive Secretary of National Labour Commission Ofosu Asamoah early on promised to resolve the matter but hits a deadlock.

Meanwhile, government is racing against time to stop the growing agitations on the labour front because University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) intends to declare strike on August 2.
