SSA-UoG, FUSSAG strike blocking resolution efforts –NLC

The Senior Staff Association of Public Universities in Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG) are currently on strike, which the National Labour Commission (NLC) believes is hindering efforts to address their concerns.

Ofosu Asamoah, the Executive Secretary of the NLC, has tried unsuccessfully to persuade the striking group to end the strike and engage in negotiations. He fears that prolonging the strike will impede progress towards resolving their issues. Mr. Asamoah is hopeful that the Senior Staff will call off their strike immediately to allow for a scheduled meeting next week. He explains that the Commission is prepared to settle the matter summarily, through mediation or arbitration.

However, the Senior Staff claim they are unable to meet sooner and suggest a meeting on the 24th instead. The NLC had previously written to both parties to prevent the strike from happening, urging them to take steps to avert it. Despite the strike, Mr. Asamoah emphasizes the urgency of attending to the associated issues.

Isaac Donkoh, the National President of the Senior Staff Association, expresses a willingness to end the strike and return to the negotiation table if the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission withdraws its denial of their overtime allowance.

In response to the strike, Mr. Ben Arthur, the CEO of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, considers it unfortunate and states that any non-compliance issues should be resolved through direct communication.
