Trump testifies in E Jean Carroll defamation case

Former US President Donald Trump briefly testified in a defamation case filed by fashion writer E Jean Carroll at a New York Court. A judge has already deemed Trump’s statements as defamatory, and now it is left to the jury to determine the amount of damages he must pay. Prior to taking the stand, Trump was admonished by the judge for interrupting the proceedings when he stated, “I never met this woman.”

In a prior civil fraud trial, a jury found that Carroll was sexually abused by Trump in the 1990s, but this particular case revolves around Trump’s comments about her in 2019. Carroll is seeking $10m (£7.8m) in damages, claiming that these comments damaged her reputation and resulted in numerous death threats.

Trump denies any wrongdoing and asserts that he never instructed anyone to harm her. As he campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination, Trump finds himself entangled in various legal issues, with this case being just one of them.
