Tunisians Protest: 1000s fight Prez Saied to resign over ‘power snatch’

Demonstrators in Tunisia are mounting intense pressure on President Kais Saied to leave office after he declared he would lead the country by decree, brushing aside provisions of the 2014 Constitution.

Thousands of demonstrators mobilized in Tunisia’s capital to challenge President Kais Saied’s transition to hold onto political power by decree.

Demonstrators assembled on Sunday in the focal point of Tunis along Habib Bourguiba Avenue under a watertight police presence to request his immediate exit from political office, reciting, “individuals need the fall of the military junta.”

Disregarding a significant provisions of the 2014 constitution, Saied enabled himself to govern by decree on Wednesday, two months after showing his Prime Minister the exit, suspending parliament, and taking over executive seat of government.

Around 2,000 individuals gathered at iconic National Theatre, a famous avenue for all major protests and anti-Saied demonstrations in Tunis.

I’m super furious,” said Soumaya Werhani, a 30-year-old understudy in the midst of the thunder of the group and the intense pressure. “We are showing to censure the president’s choices to stop the constitution and his upset against state foundations.”

Around 20 worldwide and Tunisian fundamental human rights issued statement on Saturday censuring the move as a “power snatch”.

The signatories contended the pronouncement, which fortifies the forces of the president’s office to the detriment of those of the PM and parliament, is “certainly repealing the sacred request in … an initial move towards tyranny”.
