Zambia polls: Opposition cries foul as Prez Lungu shutdowns WhatsApp, Twitter

Zambia’s Opposition Leader Hakainde Hichilema and supporters are crying foul in Thurday polls after government totally shutdown social media including Twitter and WhatsApp.

The Opposition party suspect a foul play in highly tense elections.

Zambian President Edgar Lungu and Opposition Leader Hakainde Hichilema are facing off for the third time in the knife-edge polls.

Zambian electorate casting their ballots in a full-blown elections after a competitive electioneering campaigns characterisex by economic hardships amid devastating effects of the infectious Covid-19 disease.

Over 7 million citizens registered to cast their votes for incumbent president, legislators and local government representatives in the polls that opened at 6am (04:00 GMT) on Thursday and expected to end 12 hours later at more than 12,000 voting stations across Zambia.

According to the Supreme laws of Zambia, the winning candidate must poll more than 50 percent of votes to escape a run-off, which analysts argued it is unlikely.

Meanwhile, evidence suggests that Zambian Incumbent President Edgar Lungu is winning the polls as his closest contender Hakainde Hichilema continues to dispute the electoral results.
