Domelevo questions Bawumia’s credibility to fight corruption
Daniel Domelevo, the former Auditor General, has expressed doubts about Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s ability and credibility to combat corruption as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Domelevo’s remarks came in response to Dr Bawumia’s pledge to tackle corruption in the NPP’s 2024 election manifesto. In an interview on Joy News’ Upfront with Raymond Acquah, Domelevo challenged Dr Bawumia to demonstrate his commitment by being transparent about the significant funding for his campaign.
Domelevo questioned the source of the approximately 80 million Ghana cedis used for the primaries, indicating that as a vice president, Dr Bawumia’s salary alone would not account for such a sum. He suggested that Dr Bawumia should have disclosed any additional sources of income or inherited wealth that contributed to the funding of his party.
As criticisms mount, Mary Awelana Addah, the Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative, has also raised concerns about the NPP’s anti-corruption proposals, deeming them inadequate. Addah highlighted the absence of specific strategies and indicators in the manifesto to demonstrate how corruption would be effectively tackled.
In her view, to effectively address corruption, political leaders must demonstrate personal integrity and provide clear plans with concrete actions to address the issue.
