E-levy: Change your modus operandi for trust and decency to prevail- Sly to Majority

Former Flagbearer Aspirant of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sylvester Mensah has asked the book runners of Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led Administration and Majority Group in Ghana’s Parliament to go back to the drawing board and change their approach of running government business to re-gain trust and decency to prevail.

Mr. Slyvester Mensah, Former NDC Flagbearer Aspirant and NHIA Boss

The latest advice from the former National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Boss follows, the opposition that continues to characterise the passage of controversial E-levy Bill in Parliament.

It is important to anchor the point that the attempt by the Majority Group to pass the E-levy Bill under certificate of urgency during which First Second Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu unilaterally decided to bend the rules and vote, resulted in chaotic scenes in December 2021 before Christmas break.

Sylvester Mensah in a write-up said “It is clear that leadership of the majority group would have to revise their modus operandi for trust and decency to prevail. We can all see the shame that Hon Joe Wise’s surreptitious attempt to vote, while in the Chair as Speaker, has brought about. A needless embarrassment to our democracy!”.

According to Mr. Mensah, government should tone down on arrogance display, usher-in respect for each other to create fertile grounds for consensus building on government policies including controversial E-levy Bill.

Below is the write-up by Mr. Sylvester Mensah:

The egos of those leading government business in our Parliament, currently, are growing out of control such that consensus building and compromises which anchor political decision-making seem to be replaced with arrogance, intrigues and a false sense of entitlement, perhaps because of the the crippling effect of power. But I’m afraid the old social order in Parliament is clearly pregnant with a new one, arising from the current leadership and governance architecture in the House of Parliament.

It is clear that leadership of the majority group would have to revise their modus operandi for trust and decency to prevail. We can all see the shame that Hon Joe Wise’s surreptitious attempt to vote, while in the Chair as Speaker, has brought about. A needless embarrassment to our democracy!

Let’s be mindful that the stakes are high and any conduct contrary to standing orders, which seeks to give undue advantage to either side would no doubt be resisted by any means possible.

Respect for one another and the will of the people is the only remedy for sanity in our political engagements.
