The family of Alhaji Amadu Sulley, the former Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), has announced his sudden passing.
He passed away on the afternoon of March 1, 2025. In accordance with Islamic customs, his burial rites were conducted immediately.
The family has confirmed that the late Alhaji Sulley will be laid to rest tomorrow, Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Madina Muslim Cemetery.
A statement issued by the family, as reported by 3news on March 1, invited Muslim brothers and sisters, friends, and loved ones to join the burial proceedings both at his residence and at the cemetery.
“Alhamdulillah, Alhaji Amadu Sulley passed away on the first day of Ramadan while fasting. May Allah grant him forgiveness and bless all our departed souls with Jannat al-Firdaus,” the statement read.
Alhaji Sulley served as the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission from 2012, after being appointed by then-President John Evans Atta-Mills. Before his promotion, he had held the position of Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the EC. His appointment as Deputy Chairman marked the first time a career electoral officer reached such a high position within the Commission. He held the role until his dismissal in June 2018, following allegations of illegal vote transfers during the 2016 Ghanaian general elections.
Born and raised in Accra, Amadu Sulley attended the Ghana National School (now Richard Akwei Memorial School) for his elementary education. He completed his Ordinary Level studies at Accra Academy and his Advanced Level at Opoku Ware School. He furthered his education at the University of Ghana, where he earned a Diploma in Statistics in 1985. Later, he obtained a Post Graduate Certificate and Diploma in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration in 1993 and 1995, respectively. His project work focused on the Ghanaian electoral system.
