IBLS Day 2025: GAMLS congratulates all lab scientists
GAMLS salutes medical lab scientists on IBLS Day
The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has extended heartfelt congratulations to all Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) across the nation and around the world as they join the global community to mark International Biomedical Laboratory Science (IBLS) Day, celebrated annually on April 15. This year’s celebration shines a spotlight on a crucial message: “Biomedical Laboratory Scientists Promoting Sustainability in Clinical Diagnostics.”
The silent pillars of healthcare
Medical Laboratory Scientists play a vital, often invisible role in the health system. Behind every accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan is the expertise of a laboratory professional. According to GAMLS, these unsung heroes are the very backbone of clinical decision-making, ensuring that healthcare delivery is both precise and timely. Their contribution goes beyond diagnostics—it extends to disease surveillance, outbreak response, and driving innovations that enhance public health outcomes.
Championing sustainability in clinical diagnostics
The 2025 IBLS Day theme emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable systems within clinical laboratories. GAMLS has highlighted that sustainable diagnostics must be underpinned by strategic investment in infrastructure, a robust and well-trained workforce, and the adoption of eco-friendly practices and technologies. The association emphasized that accurate, efficient, and sustainable diagnostic services are non-negotiable if Ghana is to realize its vision of becoming a health tourism hub.
Funding medical laboratory Slservices: A critical call
In its IBLS Day message, GAMLS reiterated its long-standing advocacy for separating laboratory charges from general NHIS tariffs, calling this a pivotal step toward long-term sustainability. The association welcomed the President’s decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy, but insisted on urgent reforms that guarantee dedicated funding for medical laboratory services. A policy shift that mandates the ring-fencing of NHIL funds solely for laboratory operations is key to the sector’s growth and sustainability, GAMLS urged.
Infrastructure, innovation, and investment
A major pillar of sustainable diagnostics is investment—both in physical infrastructure and in people. GAMLS called on the government to prioritize laboratory infrastructure development, adopt cutting-edge diagnostic technologies, and retain skilled professionals through fair remuneration and better working conditions. “Without a sustainable development plan,” the statement noted, “quality healthcare delivery will continue to face significant barriers.”
The human resource crisis in medical laboratories
Despite their critical role, medical laboratory scientists in Ghana remain under-prioritized. GAMLS highlighted that no new lab scientists have been recruited into the public sector since 2020, placing a massive strain on already-stretched personnel. Compounding this challenge is the increasing migration of skilled professionals—over 1,000 have left for opportunities abroad in the past year alone. The exodus, GAMLS warns, threatens the future of the profession and the sustainability of medical diagnostic services in the country.
Regulatory reforms and professional development
GAMLS renewed its call for the immediate establishment of the Medical Laboratory Council to oversee regulation, training, and accreditation in the sector. In line with international best practices and the West African Health Organization’s (WAHO) guidelines, the association also advocated for the creation of a national college under the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science to train local specialists to meet global standards.
Unregulated training institutions and uncontrolled admissions were identified as major risks to public health, which could be addressed through proper oversight by a dedicated regulatory body. GAMLS called for legislative amendments and proactive governance to protect the integrity and future of the profession.
A call to action for all stakeholders
As Ghana celebrates IBLS Day 2025, GAMLS is urging all stakeholders—government, healthcare institutions, academia, and international partners—to unite in supporting the medical laboratory profession. The path to sustainable healthcare, the association believes, begins in the laboratory.
Renewing commitment to a healthier future
Dr. Eric Kofi Aidoo, President of GAMLS, and Dr. Solomon Kwashie, the General Secretary, signed off the statement by paying tribute to the professionalism, dedication, and resilience of Ghana’s Medical Laboratory Scientists. As the world focuses on building sustainable health systems, Ghana must ensure its laboratory sector is well-resourced, well-regulated, and future-ready.
Happy IBLS Day 2025!
Let us celebrate the professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes—because without them, there is no diagnosis, no treatment, and no cure.
