Raila Odinga eyes AU Commission Chair

Renowned Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has officially announced his candidacy for the Chairperson position of the African Union Commission (AUC), a potential historic leadership bid.

In a press briefing on Thursday, Odinga declared his intention to run for the influential role after consulting with allies.

“If Africa wants me, I am ready to serve. I am ready to pursue the chairmanship of the African Union,” Odinga stated.

Odinga expressed concern over the “brain drain” of African youth and pledged to use his leadership to improve the continent’s economic situation.

Drawing on his experience as the AU special envoy for infrastructure development in Africa from 2018 to 2023, Odinga highlighted his qualifications for the position.

Odinga also revealed that he has engaged with former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo to rally support for his candidacy. Obasanjo endorsed Odinga’s bid, emphasizing the importance of having an East African leader in the AUC chairperson role.

With the incumbent AUC chairperson set to step down next year, Odinga’s candidacy carries significant implications for continental governance and development.
