Star Oil sells petrol at ¢14.53 and diesel ¢16.97 per litre
Star Oil Slashes Fuel Prices to NPA Price Floor, Sells Petrol at GH¢14.53 and Diesel at GH¢16.97
Star Oil Reduces Ex-Pump Prices
Star Oil has reduced its ex-pump fuel prices to the National Petroleum Authority’s (NPA) approved price floor for the first pricing window of August, providing some relief to motorists after fuel prices surged at the beginning of the month. The latest adjustment marks the third revision of the company’s ex-pump prices since the August pricing window commenced.
Under the new prices, petrol is now selling at GH¢14.53 per litre, down from GH¢15.57 earlier on Monday. Diesel has also seen a significant reduction, falling from GH¢18.97 to GH¢16.97 per litre, in line with the NPA’s price floor.
Government Intervention Drives Diesel Price Reduction
Star Oil attributed the reduction in diesel prices to the government’s decision to temporarily lower the regulatory margin on diesel by GH¢2.00 per litre.
The intervention, which takes effect from Tuesday, August 4, 2026, will remain in force for one month and is aimed solely at diesel. There is no corresponding reduction in the regulatory margin for petrol. According to the government, the measure is intended to cushion consumers and businesses against rising fuel costs while helping to ease pressure on commercial transport fares and inflation.
Global Market Pressures Continue
The latest price adjustment comes against the backdrop of sustained increases in international crude oil prices and renewed pressure on the Ghana cedi, both of which have pushed up the cost of importing petroleum products. Despite these external challenges, the government’s temporary intervention has created room for immediate reductions in diesel prices.
More OMCs Expected to Follow
Industry observers expect more Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to revise their diesel prices downward from Tuesday as the government’s intervention takes effect. The anticipated reductions are expected to narrow the gap between prevailing pump prices and the NPA’s approved price floor, offering consumers some respite after the sharp increases witnessed at the start of August. Before the intervention, diesel prices at some filling stations were approaching GH¢20 per litre, while petrol prices had already exceeded GH¢15 per litre.
Current Fuel Prices Across Major OMCs
At state-owned GOIL stations, petrol is currently selling at GH¢15.99 per litre, diesel at GH¢19.26 per litre, while Super XP 95 is priced at GH¢17.30 per litre.
Shell outlets are selling petrol at GH¢16.29 per litre, with diesel retailing at GH¢19.49 per litre. Similarly, TotalEnergies is charging GH¢16.29 per litre for petrol and GH¢19.49 per litre for diesel.
Relief Limited to Diesel
While the government’s intervention is expected to bring immediate savings for diesel users, the relief remains temporary and applies only to diesel.
Petrol prices, on the other hand, will continue to be determined by prevailing market conditions, including movements in global oil prices and exchange rate fluctuations.
