FIFA defends Folarin Balogun’s red card after Trump’s call
FIFA Reaffirms Independence of Judicial Bodies
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the independence of the organisation’s judicial system following public debate surrounding the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun. The controversy emerged after FIFA’s independent Disciplinary Committee upheld disciplinary action against Balogun following his red card. Reports that the issue attracted attention beyond football including from United States President Donald Trump sparked discussions about whether external influence could affect FIFA’s decision-making process.
Infantino Confirms Conversation With Trump
Addressing the matter, Infantino acknowledged that he had spoken with President Donald Trump regarding Balogun’s suspension. However, he insisted that FIFA’s disciplinary decisions are made solely by its independent judicial bodies and remain free from political or external interference.
According to Infantino, while he regularly engages with world leaders on football-related matters, such conversations have no bearing on ongoing disciplinary proceedings.
FIFA’s Judicial Bodies Operate Autonomously
Infantino stressed that FIFA’s disciplinary structures function independently and apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code based on the facts and regulations governing each case. He explained that during his discussion with President Trump, he made it clear that Balogun’s case was already before the appropriate FIFA judicial authorities and would be resolved through the organisation’s established legal process. The FIFA President described the independence of these bodies as a cornerstone of the organisation’s credibility and integrity, saying their autonomy must always be respected.
Respecting Decisions Regardless of Personal Opinion
Infantino admitted that he does not always agree with decisions taken by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee but emphasised that respecting their authority is essential. He noted that, like many observers, he sometimes agrees with rulings, sometimes disagrees, and is occasionally surprised by them. Nevertheless, he maintained that personal opinions should never override the independence of the judicial process.
Integrity of Football Comes First
According to Infantino, preserving the autonomy of FIFA’s disciplinary institutions is critical to maintaining fairness and public confidence in global football. He argued that respect for independent institutions and the rule of law protects the integrity of football competitions and safeguards FIFA’s credibility, regardless of whether individual decisions prove popular.
Wider Debate Over FIFA’s Disciplinary Powers
Infantino’s remarks come amid broader discussions about the authority of FIFA’s disciplinary bodies and whether sanctions imposed during major competitions should be reviewed, reduced or upheld under existing football regulations. The Balogun case has renewed attention on the balance between sporting justice, institutional independence and external scrutiny, with FIFA reiterating that its judicial processes must remain insulated from outside influence.
