Parks & Gardens Land, Cantonments Under Threat

Parks & Gardens land at Cantonments is once again under threat.

The Director of Parks & Gardens Dr. Daniel Kingsford Adams confirmed that Goldbod had offered to build “an edifice” for Parks & Gardens in exchange for 3 acres of land. Workers at Parks & Gardens have strongly rejected the proposal.

Ghana’s visionary first President Kwame Nkrumah understood the importance of the environment and green spaces and acquired land in all our regional capitals to beautify the nation, conserve the environment, and develop Ghana’s horticultural potential.

He established the Ministry of Parks & Gardens in 1965 under Cabinet Minister Emmanuel Nee Ocansey.

Unfortunately, the Ministry of Parks & Gardens was downgraded to a Department after the 1966 coup. It is currently under the Ministry of Local Government.

Eco-Conscious Citizens stand with Parks & Gardens workers and urge the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, to ensure that Parks & Gardens lands across Ghana are kept for horticultural purposes, the reason for which they were acquired. The Group is also asking for an audit of all Parks & Gardens land.

At a time when our forests are being decimated, our green spaces encroached by developers, we cannot stand idly by whilst there are attempts to appropriate Parks & Gardens land.
