Release Dennis Miracles Aboagye now – NPP to EOCO

NPP Alleges Arrest of Party Communicator
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to immediately release one of its communications team members, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, following what it describes as his arrest by EOCO officers with the assistance of officials of the Ghana Immigration Service. The allegation was made by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, in a Facebook post on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

At the time of publication, EOCO had not issued an official statement on the matter, and the circumstances surrounding the alleged arrest remained unclear. The claims by the NPP could not be independently verified.

Alleged Airport Arrest
According to Mr. Kodua, Mr. Aboagye was allegedly arrested at the airport before being taken into EOCO custody.
He further claimed that since the arrest, the party communicator’s lawyers had been denied access to him and that his whereabouts had not been disclosed.
Officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), with the help of Immigration officers, arrested Dennis Miracles Aboagye at the airport and took him into custody. Since then, they have denied his lawyers access, and his whereabouts are not disclosed, with no charges proffered,” Mr. Kodua stated.

Claims of Political Intimidation
The NPP General Secretary described the incident as an attempt to intimidate political opponents rather than a legitimate law enforcement action.
According to him, Mr. Aboagye, who recently announced his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Officer of the NPP, has been one of the party’s most vocal communicators and a strong critic of the government. Mr. Kodua argued that Mr. Aboagye had consistently questioned the government’s handling of illegal mining (galamsey) and other national issues.
“Let us be clear about what this is. It is not law enforcement. It is intimidation,” he wrote.

NPP Demands Immediate Release or Court Appearance
The opposition party has demanded that EOCO either release Mr. Aboagye without delay or formally charge him and present him before a court in accordance with the Constitution.
The party also called for immediate and unrestricted access for his lawyers and family members. “That EOCO release Dennis Miracles Aboagye immediately, or charge him and put him before a court of competent jurisdiction as the Constitution requires,” the statement said.

Mr. Kodua further cited Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution, insisting that the constitutional rights of the detained party member must be respected.
Accusations Against Government
The NPP accused the government of using state institutions to target members of the opposition through what it described as politically motivated arrests and detentions. The party warned against the politicisation of state institutions, arguing that such actions undermine public confidence in democratic governance.

Addressing EOCO directly, Mr. Kodua stated:
We say to EOCO and to those directing it: institutions of state are not private weapons. Ghanaians are watching, and Ghana’s institutions will outlive this government.”

Call for Calm
Despite its strong criticism, the NPP has urged its members and supporters to remain calm while awaiting further developments. As of publication, EOCO had not responded publicly to the allegations, and no official explanation had been provided regarding the reported arrest or any possible charges against Mr. Aboagye.
