Asantehene Announces Destoolment
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio, the Paramount Chief of Kenyase II, bringing an end to his remarkable 89-year reign. The decision was announced during a meeting of the Asanteman Traditional Council on Monday, July 27, 2026. The announcement marks the conclusion of one of the longest-serving traditional leadership tenures in the history of the Asante Kingdom.
A Historic Reign Comes to an End
Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio was enstooled in 1937 and served as the Kenyase II Manhene for nearly nine decades. His reign spanned multiple generations and witnessed significant political, social, and cultural changes within Asanteman and Ghana as a whole. Recognised as the longest-reigning Paramount Chief in Asanteman, his leadership formed an important chapter in the kingdom’s traditional governance and heritage.
Reasons Behind the Destoolment
According to proceedings of the Asanteman Traditional Council, the decision to destool the Kenyase II Manhene was based on violations of Asante customs and traditions.
The Traditional Council determined that the breaches were serious enough to warrant his removal from office, underscoring the importance of adherence to established customs within the chieftaincy institution.
Kingmakers Also Sanctioned
The disciplinary action extended beyond the Paramount Chief. Nearly all of his kingmakers were also destooled after they were found to have violated the oath of office associated with their traditional responsibilities. However, the Asantehene exercised discretion by sparing the Kontihene. In addition, the previously destooled Akyeame and other linguists of the traditional council were reinstated.

The latest decision highlights the Asantehene’s constitutional role within the traditional system as the custodian of Asante customs, values, and traditions.
