Sudden strike at Ghana’s premier hospital
Tension gripped Korle Bu Teaching Hospital when doctors under the Korle Bu Doctors Association (KODA) declared an abrupt strike on Monday morning, 4 May 2026. The industrial action, which began without prolonged notice, threatened to disrupt critical healthcare services at one of the country’s most important medical institutions.
Patients arriving for scheduled appointments were met with uncertainty as outpatient departments slowed to a halt, raising concerns about access to urgent care.

Barely 18 hours after the strike began, cooler heads prevailed. An emergency meeting between KODA leadership and hospital management was convened, focusing on resolving tensions within the Central Laboratory. The discussions proved productive. Both sides reached an agreement that addressed the immediate concerns of the doctors, paving the way for a rapid de-escalation of the situation.
Core issue: Laboratory workspace dispute
At the heart of the conflict lies a long-standing disagreement between laboratory physicians and medical laboratory scientists. The dispute centers on professional boundaries and access to workspace within the hospital’s Central Laboratory. KODA emphasized the importance of ensuring that laboratory physicians can operate in their designated roles without interference. Hospital management, in response, provided assurances that these concerns would be addressed promptly and fairly.
Official suspension of the strike
Following the agreement, KODA formally announced the suspension of the strike. In a statement addressed to the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, the association underscored its commitment to maintaining a functional and cooperative working environment.
“We believe the peaceful coexistence of Laboratory Physicians and Medical Laboratory Scientists at the Central Laboratory is best for quality healthcare delivery,” noted KODA Chairman, Dr. Asare Offei.
Doctors reeturn, patients relieved
With the strike now on hold, doctors have been directed to resume duties immediately. Outpatient services are expected to fully restart on Tuesday, 5 May 2026. For many patients whose care was disrupted, the decision brings much-needed relief. Clinics that had been temporarily closed are set to reopen, restoring a sense of normalcy within the hospital.
A fragile calm moving forward
Despite the resolution, the situation remains delicate. The Central Laboratory continues to be a focal point, and hospital management is expected to closely monitor interactions between the two professional groups.
