EPA, MDAs crack down on noise violators, shut illegal churches, bars and event centres

EPA, Metropolitan and District Assemblies, Enforce Laws and Close Down Churches, Event Centres and Drinking Bars Operating Unlawfully With Impunity and Breaking Noise Laws
The World Health Organisation warns us that noise pollution causes significant physical and mental health issues ranging from permanent hearing loss and tinnitus to cardiovascular disease- hypertension and stroke. It disrupts sleep, can induce insomnia, increases stress hormones, impairs cognitive function, and can lead to anxiety, depression, and metabolic issues such as diabetes.
It is of concern that noise pollution persists while the duty bearers largely appear to look on helplessly and say they have challenges dealing with noise pollution.
What are the challenges? The duty bearers need to enforce laws and regulations and not appear to be on the side of lawbreakers.
The White House in Koforidua is a case in point. Pensioners who built homes there for retirement in a serene environment are being robbed of peace and quiet.
They are regularly disturbed by noise pollution allegedly from The White House.
Formal complaints have been made to the Akuapim North Municipal Assembly (ANMA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), but the duty bearers are reluctant to use the tools at their disposal including closure to end the ordeal of residents.
It must be reiterated that noise pollution can cause depression, and metabolic issues such as diabetes.
According to health experts chronic noise acts as a stressor, activating the nervous system and causing high blood pressure (hypertension), coronary artery disease, and can lead to stroke.
We call on duty bearers to protect the health and well-being of residents and enforce laws. It is astonishing that establishments without Environmental Assessments have the audacity to cause noise pollution whilst the duty bearers call meetings which do not stop the noise pollution.
The duty bearers often talk of educating law breakers. The best form of Education is Enforcement.
EPA, Assemblies, Ghana Police Service, please protect the health of Ghanaians by enforcing noise laws. Uphold the law so that residents can enjoy peace and quiet in their homes.
