Aspiring NDC Nat’l Chairman Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu calls for unity, institutional stability and stronger grassroots leadership

“The NDC Must Restore, Renew and Reset to Secure Its Future” — Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu
Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, aspiring National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared that the party stands at a defining moment in its history, requiring experienced and unifying leadership to consolidate its gains and prepare it for the future. Speaking on his decision to offer himself for the National Chairmanship, Dr. Opong-Fosu said his aspiration was driven by conviction and a deep commitment to service rather than personal ambition.

“I Know Where We Started”
Dr. Opong-Fosu said his long association with the NDC had given him a unique understanding of the party’s history, values, struggles and achievements.
“I have been part of the NDC journey from its foundation. I know where we started, the values upon which our great party was built, the struggles we have endured, the victories we have achieved, and how far we have come together.”
He said that institutional memory had strengthened his sense of responsibility to contribute to the party’s next chapter.

A Decision Driven by Service
According to Dr. Opong-Fosu, his decision to contest the National Chairmanship was not motivated by convenience or personal ambition.
“My decision is born out of conviction, not convenience; service, not personal ambition.”

He said the office of National Chairman demanded a leader capable of bringing together different interests, strengthening party structures and maintaining institutional continuity.

Consolidating Power and Protecting the Gains
Dr. Opong-Fosu stressed the need for the NDC to remain focused on consolidating its political gains while strengthening the structures that sustain the party.
He also underscored the importance of protecting the legacy of President John Dramani Mahama and ensuring that the party remains sufficiently organised and united to meet the demands of the future. He argued that the task ahead required experience, stability, institutional knowledge and leadership grounded in both the history and future aspirations of the NDC.

Experience for a Defining Moment
Having served the NDC, government and country in various capacities over the years, Dr. Opong-Fosu said he was prepared to bring his experience to bear on the responsibilities of the National Chairmanship. He said the party needed leadership that understood not only its political structures but also the aspirations of its members at the grassroots.

“The task ahead requires experience, stability, institutional knowledge and leadership that understands both the foundations of our party and the demands of its future.”

Reconnecting the Grassroots With Leadership
A central part of Dr. Opong-Fosu’s vision is to strengthen the relationship between the party’s grassroots and national leadership. He believes the NDC’s enduring strength must continue to come from its members from polling stations and constituencies through to the regional and national structures. He is therefore advocating stronger internal cohesion, greater inclusion and meaningful participation by party members at every level.

Empowering the Next Generation
Dr. Opong-Fosu also believes the NDC must deliberately prepare a new generation of leaders. He said the party’s responsibility extends beyond winning elections to building an enduring political institution capable of sustaining its values and influence for generations.
That, he said, requires creating opportunities for young people to participate, develop leadership skills and take up greater responsibilities within the party.

Restoration. Renewal. Resetting.
Dr. Opong-Fosu has captured his vision for the NDC in three words:
Restoration. Renewal. Resetting.
Restoration, he says, means reconnecting with the values and principles upon which the NDC was founded.
Renewal means strengthening the party, empowering its members and preparing the next generation. Resetting means creating a more united, inclusive, disciplined and enduring political institution capable of confronting the challenges ahead.

“This Is Our Moment”
Dr. Opong-Fosu believes the present moment offers the NDC an opportunity to strengthen itself from within and build on its achievements.
“Together, we can strengthen the bond between our grassroots and leadership, deepen unity across the party, empower the next generation, consolidate our gains and build an NDC capable of sustaining its strength for generations to come.”
He said his aspiration was ultimately about service to the party and helping to secure its future.
“I Am Ready to Serve. I Am Ready to Lead.”

Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu ended his appeal with a clear declaration of readiness.
“I am ready to serve. I am ready to lead.”
For him, the National Chairmanship is an opportunity to provide experienced, stable and unifying leadership at a critical point in the NDC’s journey.
His message is clear: the next chapter of the NDC must be built on its history, strengthened by unity and guided by a renewed commitment to service.
