Ejura clash: conduct ministerial inquiry- Prez to Dery
President Akufo-Addo has tasked Interior Minister Ambrose Dery to immediately launch full scale inquiry into the latest chaotic clash between police, military and residents of Ejura Sekyere-Odumasi in Ashanti Region in ten days.
Chaotic scenes broke out at Ejura Sekyere-Odumasi between gun-firing police and unarmed residents during protest over the murder of Ibrahim Mohammed popularly known as Kaaka. Kaaka also referred to as Kako Macho his peers meet his untimely death upon attack by unidentified assailants who pounced on him and lynched.
A statement signed and issued on Wednesday by Director of Communication at the Presidency Eugene Arhin says the president ” expressed shock when he jumped at the news that the firebrand #FixThrCountry Campaigner has suddenly kicked the bucket”.
The statement noted that President Akufo-Addo is deeply saddened by the deaths of Ibrahim Mohammed, alias Kaaka Macho, Andul Nasir Yussif and Muntala Mohammed”.
A dagger was severely used on Kaaka whilst on his way to farm at dawn. Police has since picked up a suspect: Ibrahim Anyaas and Fuseni Alhassan one of which is purported to be the biological brother of the deceased.
In a sharp reaction, the irate youth of Ejura has expressed misgivings over the latest arrest of the biological brother of the late Kaaka, accusing the police and government’s machinery of inordinate attempt to cover up for their inability to fish out the exact perpetrators of the crime.
President Akufo-Addo’s latest directive to conduct ministerial inquiry has however received a backlash from minority caucus of Parliament. In a sharp reaction at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday 30 June 2021, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu accused the Ghanaian Leader of “turning Ghana into a lawless police state, no respect for fundamental human rights of people, the youth are in a helpless situation but I advice them to remain. We’ll only accept Commission of enquiry reports that will recommend reforms not a ministerial inquiry”.
Meanwhile, President of Catholic Bishop Conference Most Rev. Philip Naameh says such “hasty and loose requests for inquiry by President Akufo-Addo and successive governments have never produced results for fixing security problems”.
