GPL: Hearts ends trophy drought

The glorious club Accra Hearts of Oak eleven years wait for trophy is over after they drew 1-1 with city rivals Liberty professionals at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday 11 July, 2021.

Hearts of Oak last won the Ghana Premier League in 2009. They have since had troubling years with different management teams been hired and fired over none performance amid supporters clashing with the Board of Directors of the clubs over some decisions they were not happy with.

Hearts started the 2020-21 season with a hope of ending the 11 years trophy drought, but on the field, they started poorly under the then Coach Odum.

Intended pressure from supporters pushed management to employ the services of Ex-Hearts of Oak Coach from South Africa, Costa Papic.

He started on a good note, but a run of poor results saw him resigned controversially amid several accusations and counter-accusations.

The Board and Management of the club then decided to settle on an indigenous coach, which saw them poached rivals Medeama FC Head and Assistant Coach Samuel Boadu and Hamza Obeng respectively.

The arrival of the new technical handles changed the fortune of Hearts of Oak from a potential top-four contender to title contender.

Hearts hope of clinching their first-ever league title after eleven years became apparent when they defeated the arch-rival Kumasi Asante Kotoko 1-0 at the Accra Stadium on the 27th June 2021 to open 3points clear at the top.

Thanks to Kotoko 2-1 defeat to Bechem United, Hearts are champions of Ghana Premier League 2020-21 with one match to spare.
