Rise to Fame in Nollywood
Duru began his acting career in 1989 and rose to prominence through his portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the 1995 film produced by renowned filmmaker Amaka Igwe. His performance in the movie earned him recognition among Nigerian film audiences and established him as one of the familiar faces in Nollywood.
Over the course of his decades-long career, the actor featured in numerous Nigerian films, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to the entertainment industry. Some of his notable film credits include Blood Money (1997), Stigma (2013) and Mboputa (2020).
Educational Background and Early Life
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru spent his early years in the Central African country, where he completed his primary and secondary education. He later moved to Nigeria to pursue higher education, enrolling at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts.
Duru graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996, building an academic foundation that complemented his passion for acting and storytelling. His film debut came in 1989 when he featured in Missing Mark, a production directed by the late filmmaker Ndubuisi Oko. His subsequent performance in Rattlesnake further strengthened his reputation and marked a significant milestone in his acting career.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his career, Duru received recognition for his contributions to the Nigerian film industry. In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
He was also honoured with the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007 in recognition of his influence on young people. Beyond his achievements on screen, Duru played an active role in the affairs of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).
In 2010, he served as the guild’s interim president and was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in the same year.
Duru Previously Denied Reports of Serious Illness
The actor’s death comes months after he publicly dismissed reports suggesting that he was battling a life-threatening illness. In June, Duru responded to footage circulating online about his health, describing the claims as false.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, the actor rejected the reports and criticised those responsible for circulating the footage. His earlier response had challenged speculation about his health, making the announcement of his death following a brief illness a significant development for his fans and admirers.
A Lasting Legacy in Nigerian Cinema
Duru’s death marks the loss of a veteran performer whose career spanned more than three decades in the Nigerian entertainment industry. From his early appearance in Missing Mark to his memorable role in Rattlesnake and his award-winning performance in Mboputa, he built a career that earned him recognition among audiences and colleagues.
His contributions extended beyond acting to include leadership within the Actors Guild of Nigeria and efforts recognised through his peace ambassador award. As tributes are expected to emerge from colleagues, fans and members of the entertainment community, Duru is remembered for his years of service to Nollywood and his enduring contribution to Nigerian filmmaking.
He is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children.
