During the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on March 7, the Electoral Commission (EC) announced that there will be no new Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) introduced for the upcoming general elections. This decision was made in collaboration with various political parties. As a result, the existing C.I. will be used for the 2024 general elections, leading to the suspension of proposed changes such as the use of the Ghana Card, guarantor system, and indelible ink.
The resolution by the EC also means that the guarantor system, which was planned to be eliminated in future registration exercises, will now be applicable for new registrants. In addition, the EC has agreed to extend the next limited voter registration exercise to cover hard-to-reach electoral areas beyond its district offices.
Moreover, the EC announced the creation of 4,000 new polling stations, bringing the total to 38,000 for the 2024 general elections. The Commission also shared its election calendar for 2024 and invited input from participating parties during the meeting.
