30% of electricity to be from nuclear energy by 2070 –Akufo-Addo

In his State of the Nation Address in 2024, President Akufo-Addo announced that the government is dedicated to providing clean and affordable electricity to support industrialization. He stated that thirty percent of electricity production would come from nuclear energy by 2070, as part of the country’s energy transition plan. The goal is to position Ghana as a net power exporter in the ECOWAS region through the West African Power Pool. This initiative is being led by the Ghana Nuclear Power Programme Organisation (GNPPO), under the Office of the President.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that thirty percent of our Electricity Production would be from nuclear energy by 2070.

“As I indicated at the US-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit and the International Framework for Nuclear Energy Co-operation (IFNEC) Ministerial Conference, held in Accra in November last year, the first of its kind in Africa, our energy Transition plan envisages thirty percent 30% per cent of our electricity production to be from nuclear energy by 2070, which is the core mandate of the Ghana Nuclear Power Programme Organisation (GNPPO), an entity under the Office of the President,” President Akufo- Addo explained.

During the State of the Nation address on Tuesday, 27 February 2024, President Akufo-Addo disclosed that it is government’s strong commitment to provide clean and affordable electricity to drive the industrialisation agenda.

“This strong commitment and position are geared towards the provision of clean and affordable electricity to drive our industralisation agenda. It is also meant to position Ghana as a net Power exporter in the ECOWAS region through the West African Power Pool,” the president stressed.

He also indicated that this project is meant to position Ghana as a net power exporter in the ECOWAS region through the West African Power Pool.
