AFCON2021: Abougabal deserves Goalkeeper of the tournament-Mendy

The World Best Goalkeeper according to FIFA and African Cup of Nations Winner, Edouard Mendy has backed popular opinions that Egyptian goalkeeper Mohammed Abou Gabal deserves the golden glove at just ended tournament.

Senegal defeated Egypt 4-2 on penalty shootout to win the AFCON trophy for the first time in their history.

The Chelsea goal Mendy was adjudged as the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Mendy missed out on the first two matches in the group stages due to Covid-19.

Aboubagal also came into the picture after the first choice goalkeeper of Egypt picked up an injury against Ivory Coast in the round of 16.

He saved Eric Bailey’s penalty in the shootout to sent the team into the next stage.

His influence and exploits in the posts caught attention of many, with some even suggesting a potential player of the tournament.

Abougabal made 15 saves in 4 matches as against 7saves in 5matches for Mendy.

Mendy in an interview with Route1futbol opined that Gabaski is the goalkeeper of the tournament.

“Edouard Mendy on Egypt GK Gabaski: “He’s the best goalkeeper in the tournament. Honestly, I spoke with him and told him he’s the best, he deserves it and honestly I was really impressed by his tournament.”

Meanwhile, social media is divided over who the best goalkeeper of the tournament is. Some feels Gabaski was robbed, while others say Mendy deserves it.
