Akufo-Addo, Ken, Gabby missing from Bawumia address

The absence of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta was noticeable as the NPP flagbearer reiterated his opposition to electronic financial transaction taxes, also known as the e-levy. He promised to eliminate the levy if elected as President of Ghana.

Vice President Bawumia held a public forum called “Bawumia Speaks” in Accra, with President Nana Akufo-Addo and Gabby Otchere-Darko both absent. Despite opposition from Dr. Bawumia, the e-levy was included in the 2022 budget and economic statement.

The event aimed to allow the NPP Flagbearer to outline his vision and priority policies for the nation if elected. Dr. Bawumia declared his intent to abolish the e-levy if elected, stating that students were currently forced to pay high fees due to the levy. He also planned to introduce a flat tax regime and limit the number of ministers and deputy ministers to no more than 50.

Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Hajia Samira Bawumia, and former President John Agyekum Kufuor attended the event. After the address, Kufuor expressed confidence in Bawumia’s leadership capabilities and urged Ghanaians to support him. He also stressed the need for visionary and competent leadership.
