Appiah-Kubi withdraws as lawyer for Chairman Wontumi

Lawyer steps aside from high-profile case
Counsel for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has withdrawn from one of the criminal cases involving his client. The lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, announced his decision during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme on Thursday, June 11. He disclosed that both his client and the High Court in Accra had already been formally informed of his withdrawal from the case.

Three Criminal Cases Before the Courts
Chairman Wontumi is currently facing three separate criminal cases before the courts. Two of the cases are linked to allegations of illegal mining activities, while the third concerns claims that he defrauded the state-owned Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM).
The legal proceedings have attracted widespread public attention due to Wontumi’s influential position within the opposition NPP and the nature of the allegations against him.

Concerns Raised Over Court Proceedings
Explaining his decision, Mr Appiah-Kubi expressed concerns about certain aspects of the judicial process. While he stopped short of providing detailed allegations, he suggested that factors outside the courtroom could be influencing the conduct of the case. The former Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North also questioned what he described as the court’s insistence on his personal appearance despite prior notification of scheduling conflicts arising from his commitments in other courts. According to him, the situation raises important questions regarding fairness, judicial discretion and the accommodation of legal practitioners managing multiple cases.

Potential Attention from the Ghana Bar Association
Mr Appiah-Kubi hinted that the matter could eventually attract the attention of the Ghana Bar Association if a formal complaint or petition is submitted.
His remarks have sparked discussion within legal circles about the relationship between the bench and the bar, as well as the need to ensure transparency and fairness in judicial proceedings.

Samreboi Case at the Centre of Withdrawal
The lawyer’s withdrawal specifically concerns the Samreboi case, one of the matters connected to alleged illegal mining operations. Illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, remains a major national issue because of its environmental and economic impact. The case is regarded as one of the most closely watched proceedings involving Chairman Wontumi, adding further significance to Mr Appiah-Kubi’s decision to step aside.

Judiciary’s Independence Under Spotlight
The allegations and concerns raised by the lawyer come against the backdrop of the judiciary’s longstanding commitment to independence and the rule of law. The Ghana Bar Association has also consistently emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of professional conduct among both lawyers and judges. Legal observers note that any claims of judicial impropriety or external influence are serious matters that must be addressed through established legal and professional channels.

Cases Expected to Continue
Despite the withdrawal of one of his lawyers from the Samreboi case, Chairman Wontumi’s legal battles are far from over. The High Court proceedings are expected to continue as prosecutors pursue the charges in the various cases before the courts. TheĀ development is likely to intensify debate over judicial case management, the rights of legal counsel, and the broader administration of justice in Ghana.
