New Executive Team Takes Charge

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) has appointed a new team of executives to lead the development and expansion of armwrestling in the Greater Accra Region.

The appointments, made in accordance with the Federation’s constitutional mandate, are expected to usher in a new phase of growth for the sport as the new executives work to strengthen the regional association and create more opportunities for athletes.

The team will serve a two-year term, after which an elective congress will be held to determine the next leadership of the Greater Accra Armwrestling Association.

DCOP Lydia Donkor to Lead the Association

At the forefront of the new administration is Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor, who assumes the position of Chairperson.

Already a member of the board of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, DCOP Donkor brings considerable experience in sports administration and law enforcement to her new role.

Her appointment is expected to provide strong leadership and strategic direction as the association seeks to expand participation, discover new talent and raise the profile of armwrestling across the region.

Experienced Team to Drive Development

Supporting DCOP Donkor is a team drawn from diverse professional backgrounds.

Assistant Comptroller of Immigration (ACI) Gordon Saah of the Ghana Immigration Service will serve as Vice Chairman, while businessman Henry Quarshie takes up the position of Secretary.

The other members are businessman Percy Kwesi Amuah, Treasurer; Brands and Communication Consultant Alberto Paa Nii Aryee, Public Relations Officer; Marketing Consultant Kendrick Aryee, Organizer; and businesswoman Osman Maaida, Women’s Commissioner.

The composition of the team brings together expertise in administration, security, business, communications, marketing and women’s development.

Focus on Grassroots Development

A major priority of the new administration will be the promotion and development of armwrestling throughout the Greater Accra Region.

The executives are expected to identify and nurture emerging talent while creating pathways for athletes to progress from grassroots competitions to regional, national and international levels.

Plans also include the organisation of regional competitions and events, as well as initiatives aimed at increasing participation and engagement in the sport.

Building Clubs in Schools and Communities

The new leadership also intends to strengthen the grassroots structure of armwrestling by facilitating the establishment of clubs in schools, communities and workplaces.

Such initiatives are expected to provide young people and other enthusiasts with greater access to the sport while creating a structured environment for talent identification and development.

The association will also pursue training and capacity-building programmes for athletes, coaches and officials to improve standards and strengthen the overall armwrestling ecosystem in the region.

Creating More Opportunities for Athletes

Collaboration with national and international armwrestling organisations will also form an important part of the association’s agenda.

Through such partnerships, the new executives hope to create more opportunities for Greater Accra athletes to compete, gain experience and potentially represent Ghana at major international events.

The leadership believes stronger collaboration among stakeholders will be critical to achieving sustainable growth for the sport.

Leadership Hits the Ground Running

The new executives have already begun work, with plans underway to develop and expand armwrestling across the region.

Chairperson DCOP Lydia Donkor expressed optimism about the task ahead and called for cooperation from stakeholders.

“We are excited to take on this challenge and contribute to the growth and development of armwrestling in the Greater Accra Region,” she said.

“We look forward to working with all stakeholders to achieve our goals and make armwrestling a force to be reckoned with in the region.”

The appointment of the new executives has been welcomed with enthusiasm within the armwrestling community, with athletes and supporters looking forward to seeing the impact of the new administration.

Vice Chairman ACI Gordon Saah also called on enthusiasts, athletes and supporters of the sport to support the association as it begins its two-year mandate.

“As we settle in, we’re calling on all armwrestling enthusiasts, athletes, and supporters to join us on this exciting journey,” he said.

With a clear focus on grassroots development, talent identification, capacity building and wider participation, the new Greater Accra leadership is set to embark on an ambitious programme aimed at positioning armwrestling as one of the region’s growing sporting disciplines.
