Ghana reaffirms strong ties with China

Julius Debrah has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with China, describing the relationship as a model of friendship, cooperation, and mutual prosperity. Speaking on behalf of John Dramani Mahama during the inauguration ceremony of the 2026 executives of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies, Mr. Debrah highlighted the importance of the long-standing bond between the two nations. He noted that over the years, relations between Ghana and China have expanded significantly through trade, investment, cultural exchange, and people-to-people engagement.

Celebrating friendship beyond diplomacy
Addressing guests at the ceremony, Mr. Debrah stressed that the partnership between Ghana and China extends far beyond formal diplomacy and business interests. According to him, events organised by the Chinese community in Ghana serve as reminders that the relationship is rooted in friendship, shared progress, and human connection.
Gatherings like this remind us that the relationship between Ghana and China is not just about business or diplomacy, but also about people, friendship, and shared progress,” he said. He praised the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies for promoting unity and strengthening cooperation between both countries.

Chinese community praised for economic contribution
Mr. Debrah commended the Chinese community in Ghana for its significant contribution to the country’s economic development. He acknowledged the role Chinese businesses and investors continue to play in creating employment opportunities, boosting commerce, and supporting local industries. According to the Chief of Staff, the impact of the Chinese community on Ghana’s economic growth remains visible across several sectors of the economy.

Commendation for China’s trade policies
The Chief of Staff also applauded the Chinese government’s economic policies toward African nations, especially the tariff-free access granted to African exports entering the Chinese market.
He explained that such policies demonstrate China’s willingness to support Africa’s economic development and strengthen trade relations across the continent.
When we look at the policies of the Chinese government, allowing African countries tariff-free access to export products into China, it clearly shows how much China values and supports Africa,” Mr. Debrah stated.

Mahama’s vision for an industrial Ghana
Touching on the government’s broader economic agenda, Mr. Debrah reiterated President Mahama’s ambition of transforming Ghana into a major industrial hub within West Africa.
He emphasized that the government remains focused on policies that encourage industrialisation, manufacturing, and value addition to Ghana’s natural resources.
President Mahama’s vision is to make Ghana the industrial home of West Africa,” he declared. The Chief of Staff indicated that partnerships with countries like China would be essential in helping Ghana achieve its industrialisation goals.

Tang Hong re-elected as Association President
The ceremony also witnessed the re-election of prominent businessman Tang Hong as President of the association.
His re-election was warmly welcomed by members of the Chinese community, who expressed confidence in his leadership and commitment to strengthening Ghana-China relations. Mr. Debrah congratulated the newly elected executives and encouraged them to continue fostering the spirit of friendship and cooperation that has defined relations between Ghana and China for decades.
