Coalition commends Bawumia for asking police to discontinue prosecution of suspects in his name

Coalition Applauds Bawumia’s Intervention
The Coalition for Justice and Accountable Governance has praised former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for what it describes as a demonstration of principled leadership by requesting the Ghana Police Service to discontinue any prosecution being pursued in his name.
According to the Coalition, Dr. Bawumia’s decision was based on the fact that he had not lodged any formal complaint with the police, making any arrest or prosecution in his name procedurally improper and inconsistent with the rule of law.

Coalition Insists on Strict Adherence to Legal Procedures
In a press statement signed by its Convener, Edward Tagoe (Tagor), the Coalition argued that Dr. Bawumia’s directive aligns with established legal procedures and Ghana’s constitutional principles. The statement maintained that under Ghana’s criminal justice system, the police should not initiate arrests or prosecutions in the absence of a formal complaint from an aggrieved person. It described any prosecution undertaken without a complainant as an abuse of legal process and a departure from due process.

Directive Not an Endorsement of Misconduct
The Coalition stressed that Dr. Bawumia’s request should not be interpreted as condoning insults or any form of misconduct. Rather, it said, the former Vice President’s position underscores the importance of ensuring that law enforcement agencies strictly adhere to the law by requiring a formal complaint and statement from the affected person before proceeding with any prosecution.

Rule of Law Must Prevail
Describing the issue as one of law rather than political rhetoric, the Coalition urged citizens and state institutions to remain committed to civility, transparency, accountability and the rule of law. It emphasized that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when due process is respected and weakened when justice is perceived to be selective or inconsistent with established legal procedures.

Call to Strengthen Democratic Values
The Coalition concluded by calling on all stakeholders to uphold the rule of law and safeguard Ghana’s democratic principles. It noted that genuine leadership is demonstrated by ensuring that “the right thing is done in the right way,” adding that adherence to due process remains essential to the country’s growth, progress and collective development.
