Dagbon chieftaincy dispute

The Mahami Royal Family of Dagbon has questioned the reasoning behind the arrest of four members of the family by the police over the recent killing of a sub-chief of Kari-Naa Abdulai Nantogmah, the Paramount Chief of the Karaga Traditional Area.
The family described the arrest of the four persons as provocative, saying that the arrest caused fear and panic within the third royal family of Dagbon.

On Monday 8th May, 2023, four person’s were arrested in Karaga in connection with the killing of, a sub-chief to the paramount chief of the Kataga traditional area, who’s enskinment have not been recognized by by residents of the area.

The four includes; Abdul-Rahman Baba, Garo Taufiq, Mahama Abubakari and Issahaku Osman.

The sub-chief met his untimely death when he was returning home after paying homage to the Karaga Chief whose enskinment by the Ya Naa was disputed by the Mahami Royal Family.

Speaking at press conference, spokesperson for the family Baba Weisu said the Mahami Royal Family has ruled Karaga for over a century and has therefore seen the enskinment of an Abudu person as a Karaga chief by a Ya Naa from the Andani Royal family as attempts by the Abudu and Andani Royal Families to annihilate the Mahami family in Dagbon chieftaincy.

The arrest of the suspected killers of the Sub chief caused high tensions in Karaga Township, which eventually led to the distraction of NPP structures by rampaging youth, who accused the NPP-led government of masterminding the arrests.

The spokesperson added that, the Mahami royal family is not opposed to any action by government in dealing with security matters but urged government to handle matters involving the arrest of the 4 members of the family fairly adding that, even though they are peace-loving family, they will continue to stand firm against any form of annihilation and injustice.

Acknowledging efforts by the Nana Addo led government in trying to find lasting peace to dagbon, the Mahami family called on government to set up an enquiry into the Karaga chieftaincy affairs in order to find a lasting solution to the matter.
